Are Female Leaders Good for Education? Evidence from India.∗
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper studies the impact of the politicians’ identity, along the lines of gender, on the education achieved by individuals living in their districts in India. To address this question I collected a unique and very detailed dataset on the votes received by politicians in India who contested in elections during 1967-2001. I use these data to identify close elections between women and men, which yield quasiexperimental election outcomes used to estimate the causal effect of a politician’s gender. Combining this electoral data with NSS survey data I show that increasing female political representation by 10% increases the probability that an individual attains primary education in an urban area by 6 percentage points. JEL classification: D70, H19, H40, I2, O10.
